The Conversation

Here’s a little creative exercise about the internal dialog between a Christian and his Flesh during a time of prayer and fasting. Hope you enjoy it.

Flesh:  Hey.

Heart:  What?

Flesh:  It’s Monday.

Heart:  So?

Flesh:  We always get KFC on Mondays. And I’m Hungry.

Heart: Not Today.

Flesh:  Why not?

Heart: We’re Fasting.

Flesh: But I want Food, I’m hungry.

Heart: I’m not surprised. We haven’t eaten since last night. Answers still no. Spirit man says we need to fast.

Flesh: I hate that ‘Do Gooder’. He never lets us do anything fun. I was okay when he first came in because I used to run the show and he kept to himself. But for some reason you put him in charge. I thought we had a good thing going? What happened between us?

Heart: You almost destroyed us. You left the joint a pig sty. Spirit Man had to spend at least six months clearing out the useless garbage you made us collect. I almost lost my wife because you said you just had to have that pretty girl. And if you had continued in charge I would have been thrown into prison for a very long time. That’s what happened.

Flesh: Yeah, but at least I always got what I wanted. That’s the main thing.

Flesh: Hey!

Heart: What?

Flesh: I’m hungry.

Heart: I know. You already said that. Go away!

Flesh:  Look. There’s a Macca’s around the corner. Let’s go there. No one will ever know.

Heart: No. Spirit man is in charge. And he says Fast so that’s what we’re doing.

Flesh trots off to Spirit Man.

Flesh: Hey.

Spirit Man: I’m busy. What do you want?

Flesh: Just wanted to say I feel like God is telling me that you’ve fasted enough and you can stop now.

Spirit Man: You must be joking.

Flesh: Doesn’t the bible say that God helps those who help themselves. Why don’t we help ourselves to a burger and fries.

Spirit Man: Go away!

Flesh puts on a white sheet and trots off to Heart.

Flesh: Hey! This is the Holy Spirit. You have fasted long enough. You can eat now.

Heart: Don’t be an idiot.

Flesh: But we’re hungry.

Heart: Look! Go and get Spirit Man and we’ll sort this out right now. I’m sick of this. You’re worse than my six year old.

Flesh and Spirit Man: We’re here.

Heart: Spirit man, you have called a fast, Why?

Spirit Man: Clean the vessel so God can use us. I want lives changed. I what to pray for the ill and see them recover. I want a closer relationship with the father. I want his undiluted power flowing through me like a river. I want to change those around me. My town. My city. Even my nation.

Heart: Impressive. And Flesh, I’m almost afraid to ask, What is the extent of your vision? Where do you see us going?

Flesh: A hamburger. But Hey, I am willing to compromise, I’m good at that. I’ll settle for Subway.

Heart: Sorry Bro, gotta go with Spirit man on this one.

Flesh: Oh come on Man. Just one pack of chips.

Heart: No.

Flesh: A chocolate bar?

Heart: No.

Flesh: A piece of fruit. Come on man. That’s the best I can do.

Heart: Look. KFC will be there tomorrow. One day a week will not kill you.

Flesh: But I’m dying here.

Heart: I think that’s kind of the idea.

Spirit Man: Yep.

Flesh: So unfair. I want to eat. Give me food. NOW!

Heart: Just shut up. We are fasting today and if I hear one more word about it I’ll fast tomorrow too.

The end.

Curtis, I’m so sorry

This is my son. He always does nutty stuff like this pose and makes me laugh.

Today I helped him with his ‘sea star’ project. I highlighted the sentences to use. He carefully copied the words onto the poster. Took the afternoon. And he did a wonderful job. Then all he had to do was draw three sea stars. One of the functions of this blog is to act as a record for my kids about what I think and what my experiences are, if they are interested. I want it to contain the good, the bad, and the ugly. His to sea star looked to me like the top of a wolf, and I told him. The sensitive little boy took it to heart and cried. I learned a very important lesson about careless words, even though I did not mean any offence. So I’m here saying I am not perfect (Sometimes I’m not even good) and to say publicly that I am sorry. I will do better in the future.

Sea Star

Now that’s one cool Sea Star!

Something to think about

Last week something went into my head and wouldn’t leave me alone.

In Gen 1:3 it says

Then God said, ”Let there be light”.

Here is the million dollar question:

What language was God using when he spoke the words and created the world?

Since there were no people, I doubt it was any of the audible languages humans use. Surely the purpose of the spoken word is to convey information. There were angels (Job 38v7) which makes me think it was the language of Angels. But what is that?

It’s obvious that an Angel is not a physical entity, unless they have dealings with men. And then they have the ability to take on Human form from time to time. (Heb 13v2)

Usually they are non-corporeal entities. I personally have felt angels. Been physically saved from serious injury by Angels on more than one occasion, but I have never seen them.

In Gen 15v1 God gave a vision to Abram and said to him….

What is a vision? Is it not thoughts placed into a man’s heart no one else can experience?

What about dreams? Are they not thoughts from a person’s heart while the conscience and reasoning faculties are inactive?

What of a word of Knowledge? Is it not a thought placed within your heart by God, since he knows men’s thoughts? (Ps 94v11) (Mat 9v4)(1Co 3v20)

In my life, whenever God has spoken to me, whether it was reading the bible, listening to a preacher, watching a sunrise, or singing in worship, it has always been without fail with thoughts.

I have also noticed that the enemies, who are fallen, filthy spirits, also use thoughts to convey their message of death, and inspire destruction and injury.

I am almost entirely convinced that our thoughts are the speech of the spiritual realm. Pure, wonderful, affectionate, loving Thoughts are God’s native language.

But what of the enemy, can he hear our thoughts, too? Well, maybe. But if we are thinking Godly thoughts, it is like we are speaking in a language he does not understand. But if our thoughts are darkened, then he understands them perfectly.

Thoughts are related to action. Note you can say something and then not bother doing it. But if you think it, there is a very good chance action will follow (Is 55v7-8,Is 66v18)

As a man thinks, so shall he be. Sounds a lot like Let there be light. Doesn’t it

Our thoughts have unlimited constructive or destructive potential simply because we were created in the image of God.

They have the power to set the course of your life.

Makes sense that the word of God encourages us to take our thoughts captive. I think of it as a type of border protection to the country of our life. You don’t want just any old riff raff getting in and causing all sorts of issues. They can attempt to get in, but if the thoughts don’t line up with the word of God, they get locked up and deported, baby. They do not let in rapists, Terrorists, and Thieves into normal countries, why would we let them into the country of our life?

On the other hand anyone lets any old thought in, man, who do you think people get the idea to do all sorts of nutty stuff? Murder. Rape. Stealing. They just didn’t turn those nasty thoughts out. Actually , they welcome these thoughts.

What’s interesting is that if you go up to a reasonable person and say something like, “You’re an idiot. You’re fat. Why don’t you just go kill yourself? The world would be much better off without you.”

They would immediately be rejected. Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if I got slapped in the face. Not only would it be a rejection, there would be a forceful rejection. Why then do people accept all sort of these internal thoughts, many of them spoken by our enemy?

We must guard our thoughts from our heart, because our life and actions flow from them. (Pro 4:23)

Ever been in a service, standing up, singing. But you’re thinking about what’s for lunch, or what time the big game is? What do you think God hears? I have been so guilty of this in the past it’s not funny.

What about when you meet someone, act all friendly and interested and your thinking, Man, this guy is an idiot. I wish he’d just shut up so I can get out of here and do something I want to do.

What do you think God hears?

In Phil 4v8, we are encouraged to think on specific types of things, things which I believe are a foreign language to the enemy. True. Honourable. Right. Pure. Admirable. Excellent. Worthy of praise.

Because then you are shouting to the spiritual realm and setting the course of your life.

Definitely something to think about.

Here is a short piece I wrote. I hope you enjoy and get something out of it.

The ocean air caresses my weary head. The sun strokes my back like a lover. The warm sand fills the gaps between my toes. The beach comforts me in the regretful meandering of my mind.

My thoughts are a small gull, drifting on the breeze over the ever changing landscape of my deep blue past.

My Neighbor: a generous man in a funny way, but he loves to complain and whine about life, his family, his ex-wife and his ex-best friend.

He is a dam. Stopped. Unable to move on. His life restricted in a wall of unforgiveness. The life, his life, is slowly dwindling away.

“Hey Don. There is so much more. Come to church. Meet some people ,People who love and live, and show you the way to Jesus.

Over and over I plead, but it is just a joke.

“Jesus saves. Moses invests. And better a prophet than a total loss.”

He is not laughing now. The jokes have ceased.

I warn him to change his mind.

But the same negativity day after day wearies me. The still putrid water assaults my senses and so I become a prophet of doom, the herald of death.

“You need to change. It will kill you!”

Weeks pass. It is a nice sunny day lunch time and I see Dom at the letter box. He wants to talk, but I am so busy, and so wearied of his awful complaining. So I watch the sadness in his eyes as I politely decline, turn and walk away.

That afternoon his soul is required of him.

Is he my unfortunate figless tree, never to bear fruit again? Or am I speaking prophetically, a possibility sure to happen.

I thank God I look through a darkened glass. I fear my soul could not bear the thought of seeing with perfect clarity the destination of the future paths not taken by me or others. The wasted chances.

The past is clearer. Always. And I do have regrets.

I fobbed him off, robbing him of his final chance. Or maybe this time I would but up against the same dam wall as before.

I miss my infuriatingly stubborn friend, downcast and shattered, beautiful in his brokenness. I wonder if he blames me at all, or if he replays all of his chances over and over. When I said,

“Now is the time. Today is the day of salvation,”

Because not one of us can be assured of a tomorrow.

School of the Spirit Week 1

These are my notes, taken from the lectures by Richard Murray for anyone who might be interested to read them.

Note: it is long but print them out and read them slowly: the lectures ran for about 4-5 hours over 2 days which is why there is copious amounts of notes. If there is anything you do not understand, then just ask. All scripture is taken from his favourite version NKJV, the easiest to read word for word translation I am aware of.

Paul prayed for the church, which has faith and a love for the saints, to have a Spirit of wisdom and revelation; that their eyes would be opened. It is God’s wish.

Ephesians 1:15-18

15 Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your 6understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

God has given us all things, including exceedingly great promises that we can escape evil and take on his divine nature. His divine power, creative, explosive power, has been given to us.

2 Peter 1:2-4

Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the 3corruption that is in the world through lust.

There are some things that we do not know, and they belong to God, but the things revealed are for us and our descendants, should we choose to take on those things.

Deuteronomy 29:29

29 “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

God has a purpose for you. He wants you to live an abundant, blessed life, and full of his Holy Spirit. His purpose will be worked out wherever you are. The general plans of your life are your decision (where you work, what you wear, where you live) We all have free will.

He will work in your life towards a purpose that you have set, coming from a heart that is after Gods.

This hope that he gives you is not a wishy washy pie in the sky type of hope, Like I really hope this comes into being. The hope he gives has confidence, determination. Hope keeps us alive and bubbles up on the inside like an unstoppable geyser, through this darkness.

He has an inheritance in us- good deeds, and he is waiting to collect on that inheritance. His exceedingly great power is available for our use in order for us to do good deeds.

We were created in the Image of God, each of us have a Spirit, Soul, and Body. The spirit of a man is not a soul of a man, they are two separate parts.

English Word         Spirit, Soul, Body

Greek Word           Pneuma (breath, wind-this is what enters the throne room of God)

Psuche(psycology, mind, will and emotion)

Soma(it’s like a taxi cab the body gets us from one place to another)

God wants to make us Holy, his fire will burn off any of the garbage around our lives. He wants to sanctify us. Set us apart for his purposes( which may or may not include cleansing) He puts us in his cupboard until he needs us. If we are dirty, then he gives us a good clean.

1 Thessalonians 5 :23-24

23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify 7you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.

God will do it. He will sanctify us. Clean us. It is totally his responsibility. We don’t have to do any effort at all. Isn’t this liberating? It does not depend on our faithfulness at all, only on he who is completely faithful.

Word for word translations of the bible such as the KJV and NKJV have anything to do with our spirit in the past tense because it has already been accomplished, but anything which is pertaining to the soul is always put in present tense.

Luke 1:46-47

46 And Mary said:

t“My soul 9magnifies the Lord,

47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.

Her soul Magnifies, and her spirit has rejoiced.

We must strive to enter into God’s rest. Our spirit is already content and at rest in God. It is our souls that are up and down and battered down here. We must strive to reach an equilibrium with our spirit and Soul. That is how God desires us to live. And how we access his power.

God’s word is what cuts to heal, like a surgeon’s scalpel. It is sharp. Effective. It will separate the soul and spirit down to the joints and marrow (physical body) It will bring healing.

Our spirit is our life. When God created Adam, the physical body was completely perfect, but there was no life in it until God breathed his life giving spirit into man. Then his soul was created.

Genesis 2:7

And the Lord God formed man of the hdust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

The words that God speaks to us, who are his children, are Spirit and Life. It is one of the biggest points of difference to what the enemy says to us and a key way in determining if something is of God or it’s not.

The Cross of Jesus and already set us free. It has been done. It is finished. But it is the truth that continuously makes us free.

The purpose of this course is to bring us into maturity and learn biblical sonship.

Peter walked on the water and his eyes were on Jesus, Jesus told him to come and gave him a word into his spirit. He got out and walked on the water. But he looked at the waves. His external situation and began to sink because he let fear into his thinking. He shifted from living on the word from his spirit given by God to the external circumstances of his soul, and men can’t walk on water in the real world so he sank.

Matthew 14:29

So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw 5that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”

The spirit: this is where our communion with God is, where he speaks to us. It is our conscience, our intuition, our sixth sense. Our spirit is like a radio

God’s spirit is the signal, which is broadcast all over the place, but he cannot pick it up unless we tune our radio (spirit) into his signal. We need to discern what is being said to us. What is the source? Is it the soul or is it the spirit. These need to be divided. And that is why we need to be in the word constantly.

We need to get out of the airy fairy nonsense because it will not feed you. It belongs in the soul realm. We must stir ourselves up. Thoughts (spirit), from our spirit from God, and are consistent with the will and word of God, activate our emotions (soul) and end up with us taking action(Body). This is how the miraculous happen.

Psalm 103:1

Bless athe Lord, O my soul;

And all that is within me, bless His holy name!

Hear David here stirring his spirit up. It matters not what his external circumstances are( they belong to the soul)

We (our spirits) have been seated in Jesus Christ in heavenly places. Heaven is not a geographical location, it is a spiritual dimension. This has been done already. As is all things which pertain to our Spirit.

Ephesians 2:4-6

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together min the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

By his stripes we were healed. It is already done on the cross. We only have to see it worked from our spirit through our soul and body.

1 Peter 2:24

24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose 7stripes you were healed.

God’s word impregnated into the heart of a believer is explosive. We can plug into universe forming power. It is The same Power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead.

Our responsibility is to bring the new birth and life of our spirit into our soul and body so everything will be in harmony and it matters very little what happens to us here on Earth.

Car plus Petrol will get you somewhere.

Body plus Spirit creates a soul. One without the other is useless.

Our spirits are already saved by God. It is his job alone. Our job here on Earth is all about saving our own souls.

(Strange concept to those who are under the impression that the soul and spirit are the same thing)

Luke 21:19

19 By your patience possess your souls.

Or we shall win our souls in another version.

1 Peter 1:22

“You have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren”

We must purify ourselves.

1 Peter 1:9

“receiving at the end of your faith- the salvation of your souls.”

The Christian life is nothing but a process by which we save our own souls. Otherwise how does this make any sense?

James 1:21

Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

It is our responsibility to except the word into our lives which is able to save our souls. This is talking about a continuing work for Christians who have already been saved.

Hebrews 6:19

Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entered into that within the veil.

The hope we have is an anchor for our souls. Stops them drifting away.

The difference between Body, Soul, and Spirit.

The spirit says I have been saved from the penalty of sin. Happens when we believe.

The Soul says I am being saved from the power of sin. Happens in our Christian walk.

The body says I will be saved from the presence of sin. At his return when we get new bodies.

The spirit says I am completely justified.

The soul says I am being sanctified.

The body says I will be glorified.

Let’s look at the deliverance from Sin of our soul.

There is a fire triangle If you have Fuel, Oxygen, and a Spark or ignition- the you have a fire. Take any one of these elements out and the fire will go out.

A sin triangle is very similar. If you have the presence of sin (in this world it is unavoidable) a physical body, and an unregenerate spirit, then you have the three elements to create sin’s dominion.

Take one of the elements out and Sin cannot have dominion any more. In Our case God has crucified the old man, our unregenerate spirit, on the cross with Jesus, and when he raised Jesus from the dead, we were also raised.

But if we continue in sin even though we have been set free from it, it becomes our master even though it has no legal basis to hold us.

The Path of freedom:

Romans 6:6

knowing this, that jour old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be 1done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.

We should KNOW that our old man is dead.

Romans 6:11

Likewise you also, 3reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We should RECKON (an accounting term) ourselves. Consider ourselves free from it. Stop stressing so much about it and constantly giving sin our attention. God has already dealt with it. It is not our problem any more.

Romans 6:13

And do not present your members as 4instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as 4instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you,

Last step is to present our bodies to God for being used for good purposes by him.

Want to be free from the junk? Any junk? Know that Jesus died and we died with him. Just consider ourselves free from it and move on. And then use our bodies to glorify God. The sin will drop off and you will be free from it, unless you decide to go back to it, but that is never the plan.

We can never fall from salvation because we are born again of incorruptible seed. This seed cannot be corrupted.

1 Peter 1:23

having been born again, not of 2corruptible seed but 3incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides 4forever,

Spiritual death is the absence of spiritual life. Adam, when he sinned, died spiritually because he cut himself off from the source of all life.

It’s a bit like flowers. When you cut them they still look okay, but as time passes they fade and whither. Just like Adam. Just like us. God could not commune with Adam or us for that matter because he had been cut off.

But at salvation, God has given us a brand new spirit and now we can commune with him. We now have a new source from which we can draw revelation and knowledge from. Our perfect and saved spirit connects with his. We have been grafted back into the life source and it is now our responsibility to let it outwork into our soul and physical body.

God has reached out to man through Jesus which is the whole point of Christianity. Every other religion is man’s efforts to reach God.

God wants all of us to be confident of our salvation.

Philippians 1:6

being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

John 3:2-3

Beloved, now we are children of God; and we have not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

We are the children of God and we shall take on his characteristics.

In Jesus we died when he died, our old man was crucified, all our passions and lusts.

Now we have a brand new spirit. We are a different creation. We are new. We are free to walk in the spirit.

Our own life is like a tree, sin or righteousness are the fruit. We waste all our time picking up the rotten fruit off the tree. We need to realize that God has already dealt with the sin fruit by getting rid of the root. Just concentrate on producing good fruit and the bad fruit will eventually drop off. Relax about it and live in the spirit.

Jesus didn’t catch any ones diseases (and he dealt with lepers and such) they caught his health. Doesn’t matter if you see it manifest right away or not. The sun still shines on a rainy day, it is just hidden for a time. Have persistence and patience and the clouds will part and it will shine upon you again. You just might need to wait a season.

You are not for this world. Lifeless worship. Powerless living. There is much more for you. Nothing is sadder than or as strange as a majestic Eagle living with the chickens in the filth and squalor. Take to the sky. Worship! Don’t just climb a few feet in the air. Raise your hands for a minute. Sing half a song. And then come crashing down to Earth. “What’s the cricket score? What’s for dinner? What will I do this afternoon?” I want you in the sky, riding on the wind of the Holy Spirit, going where he takes you. It’s more fun than you can ever imagine. Free. Take flight. The enemy comes at you. Threatens. Chases. Snarls. He knows you do not belong to him and so hates you. Do what you were created to do. Take flight. Worship. And as you do, the enemy can only shake his fist at you a scream. “Come down here! Look at your problems. Look at your issues. Look at the cancer! Look at your debts! Look, you don’t have a job! Looks, you are still sick! Don’t worship. Curse God and die!” But rise further and further into the sky, and your problems which seemed so enormous, so insurmountable, they get smaller and smaller. Cancer. Debt. Lack. Sickness. They may, or may not be removed. It matters not. How small are they to a heart fully engaged with me? How tiny from up here? Climb even higher. Let everything just fall away until all you see is my face in a place where time is meaningless and in a place where you worship in spirit and truth. Finally, even though you walk in this Earth, your heart is with me always.
